You do not have to overwinter ivy in the garden
The normal ivy in the garden needs no special protective measures in winter. Only with freshly planted ivy can it be worthwhile to protect it in the first year with a mulch cover from frost and above all from dehydration.

For deeper buckets a special wintering is not necessary. If the ivy is maintained in the flower box, you should protect the soil from frost by placing the planters on an insulating surface and, if necessary, wrap with burlap.
Tips
The biggest problem of ivy in winter is the drought. If brown leaves show up in the spring, they are in the rarest frost damage, but dried leaves. Therefore, in dry winters, water the ivy on frost-free days.
