Maintain the ivy in the flower box
You can care for ivy not only in the pot, but also in the flower box. You can pull it as a climbing plant on the trunk or let the tendrils just hang. You only have to pay attention to a few things, so that the climbing plant thrives. So pull ivy in the flower box.
The right flower box for ivy
If the ivy is to thrive in the planter for several years, choose boxes that are a bit deeper. The roots have more space in it later.
The boxes need good drainage holes so that rainwater and excess irrigation water can drain off. Even if ivy like it a bit damp - it does not tolerate waterlogging!
Maintain ivy in the flower box
The care in the flower box does not differ from the care in the pot. Water the ivy whenever the top layer of the earth has dried.

Fertilization is not necessary. If you still want to fertilize, add some liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water every two to three weeks. However, you should replace the soil in the flower box once a year. The substrate decomposes over time, so that the roots no longer find enough support.
The right location
Ivy likes shady places rather than sunny places. Ivy in the flower box can therefore be pulled well on a north-facing balcony.
Avoid too much direct sunlight. For the variegated species to develop their colors, they need about four hours a day of sun - but no direct midday sun.
Overwinter ivy in the flower box
Ivy is absolutely hardy. Only in the first year, it is recommended to wrap the box with a jute or bubble wrap and put it on an insulating pad.
Water ivy on frost-free days, even in winter. More than cold, the plant is drought-free.
Tips
Initially, ivy does not grow very fast. If the climber in the flower box is to serve as a privacy screen for the balcony, plant merrily between the individual plants in the first year. Ivy in the flower box also looks very pretty in interaction with Clematis.
