After flowering Edelweiss forms seedlings
Multiply edelweiss by seeds
The beautiful edelweiss shows its velvety hairy, bright white star flowers in July. Originally from the high mountains plant is a real eye-catcher - and relatively easy to breed even from seeds. However, the grown plants are more difficult to cultivate because the edelweiss is very sensitive to moisture.
Sow edelweiss
Like so many mountain plants, the perennial edelweiss is a cold germ, so you must stratify the seeds before sowing. To do this, pack the seeds in an airtight sealable container or freezer bag with wet sand and store in the vegetable compartment of your refrigerator for about two weeks. Then follow these steps:
Be sure to keep the soil slightly moist from sowing. The best time for sowing is March, the latest date is April.
Maintain the young plants properly
The young plants grown from the seeds can go outdoors as soon as no (night) frosts are to be expected. This is usually the case after the icy saints.
Plant edelweiss in the garden
Edelweiss feels most comfortable in a rock garden with a permeable but sparse and calcareous substrate. In addition, the stones act as a kind of heat storage - especially if they use white stones. It is important that you pour only little and above all do not fertilize. This also means that you do without the sub-mix of compost.
Maintain edelweiss in the pot
Furthermore, the maximum up to 20 centimeters high perennial also feels very well in flower boxes, bowls or pots. Here, however, the same advice applies as for planted edelweiss plants: Choose lean, well-drained soil with a high proportion of sand and lime. Make sure that the irrigation water can drain, d. H. The planter must have good drainage.
Tips & Tricks
Older edelweiss plants are very easy to multiply and rejuvenate by division. By doing so, you increase the life of such a specimen.
