Basically, the dragon tree is extremely robust in its numerous subspecies and therefore also a very popular houseplant. However, a wrong location can quickly lead to hanging or brown leaves, so a "restart" of plant growth is required.
Rotten roots and a dying leaf crown
If dragon trees are cared for in soil rather than hydroponics, overgrowth often causes rotten and dying roots and other parts of plants. If this is the case, it can usually be clearly detected early on. Once it comes to advanced rotting symptoms of individual plant parts, a dragon tree can not be so easily saved. It then takes extremely radical measures if such a plant is not to be fully absorbed.
Use the upper part of the dragon tree as a cutting
A mere retraction of the watering is just as a quick repotting not enough to save a dragon tree with already rotted roots. But you can proceed as in the propagation of the dragon tree and cut the thin trunk with a clean secateurs in the middle. The head cuttings can then be rooted in water or a special plant substrate. During these weeks, the cuttings should be placed as shady and high humidity as possible.

At the continuous "trunk" of a dragon tree, usually no new shoots are formed below the topmost leaf crown. However, it may be necessary to cut off the upper part of the dragon tree along with all the leaves for the following reasons:
