The dragon tree is blooming - or not?
The so-called dragon tree (Dracaena) is usually available as a houseplant in stores. Since this plant does not tolerate frost, it must be cultivated in the house, at least in winter and then sometimes surprised by a sudden flowering.
Flowers are relatively rare in dragon trees in the house
Many hobby and Zimmergärtner are sometimes surprised that it can come to the dragon tree at all to a flower. As with almost all other plants, a seedling is also possible for the propagation of the dragon tree, but important for offspring is rather the production of rooted offshoots from cuttings. In the culture in the room dragon trees bloom in many cases not at all, which is why the racemose form of inflorescences is known only comparatively few people. All the more astonishing a dragon tree blossom can be then, since with the formation of the greenish-white or also reddish-colored blooms usually an enormous growth speed is to be observed.
Special features of the flower
The formation of flowers requires a lot of power from a dragon tree, which is why flower buds should be better removed from weakened specimens. If you let the dragon tree bloom, then you can enjoy a relatively long time on the perennial inflorescences. Dragon trees such as the subspecies Dracaena fragrans may secrete a very intense odor (similar to that of jasmine) during flowering. While some indoor gardeners find this smell particularly beguiling, others may feel disturbed by it.
Induce a flower in the dragon tree
There are different theories of which of the following factors flower formation depends on the dragon tree:
On the one hand, a certain dry phase should in some cases have led to surprising flowering consequences. On the other hand, it should have an effect on dragon trees inducing blooms, if the plants are kept at only about seven degrees Celsius over a period of about two weeks. By the same token, you may also be able to prevent older flowers of the dragon tree by choosing a uniformly warm location with more than twelve degrees Celsius room temperature.
Tips
Dragon trees in impressive dimensions can be discovered with a bit of luck hiking in the Canary Islands. If you want to experience the flowering of stately kite trees in the wild, you must travel to the appropriate regions during the usual flowering period from March to May.
