Cultivate date palm from seeds or shoots
Date palms are not only easy to care for, they can even be grown easily. But you need a little patience and tact. So you breed a new date palm from a sapling or seed.
Which methods are available for the propagation of date palms?
You can multiply date palms in two ways: over saplings or seeds.
The cultivation of seeds is very tedious. It can take months for the seeds to germinate and the first cotyledons to be seen.
Slightly faster is the rearing of saplings. However, this only works if the date palm in the spring drives lateral shoots.
So you breed a date palm from saplings
To breed new date palms, you can cut shoots that grow out of the ground laterally in spring. Never cut off the tip of the date palm. This removes the vegetation point and the palm tree enters.
Place the pots with the offshoots in a location that is as warm as possible. Temperatures around 25 degrees are ideal. It is good if the saplings are also heated from below.
That new roots have formed, shows up when new leaf buds appear. You only have to transplant the new date palms when the roots are already growing out of the vent hole.
Pull date palm out of seeds - how it works!
The seed is very hard-shelled and placed in lukewarm water for at least 24 hours before sowing. Then sow it in pots that you have filled with potting soil.
Cover the seed about one centimeter high with soil. Set the pot warm and light but not sunny. Keep the soil moist, avoid too much moisture.
After germination, wait until the new date palm is about ten centimeters high. Then plant them in a deep pot of palm soil.
Tips
Date palms tolerate slight frost temperatures for a short time. In a sheltered location you can even overwinter older specimens in the garden bed. It should not be colder than -6 degrees at the location.
