Dahlias are very easy to multiply by dividing the dahlia tubers. This will give you two or more identical georgines that you can groom in the garden or in the pot. This is how dahlia tubers are divided correctly.
When is it necessary to split the tubers?
The sharing is especially recommended when the tubers are very large and a bit older.
If a dahlia has a large number of large single tubers, hardly any new tubers can develop. They rob each other's nutrients. The shoots, which grow from such tubers, usually remain very thin.
Dahlia onions have a lifespan of a few years. If you maintain a particularly beautiful dahlia variety in the garden, you should divide it in time to get young plants before the old tuber no longer expels.
The best time to share dahlia tubers
Dahlias divide in the spring before you plant them out. Sometimes it is advisable to take the tubers out of the winter quarters and let them spend a few days in the house.
You can then better recognize which tubers are healthy. In addition, the bud approaches to the root necks show. That facilitates the division.
To divide the dahlias correctly
Sharing is very easy. Either break off single tubers or take a sharp and above all clean knife and cut the tuber into pieces.
Make sure that there are at least one eye on the root neck of each section, and more preferably several. From these later drive the new shoots.

Some gardeners recommend treating cuts and breakages with charcoal powder to prevent disease. That's not really necessary. Only very rare varieties should be specially protected.
