Pull dahlias in a pot on the terrace or balcony
Dahlias or Georgines can be pulled not only in the garden bed, but also very well in the bucket or in larger pots on the balcony and terrace. The care is inexpensive and you can better protect the plants from snails and voles.
Which pots are suitable?
The pot or bucket must be so large that the tuber has enough space in it. The upper diameter of the bucket should be about half the height of the adult dahlia. For varieties with 60 centimeters height, the diameter must therefore be 30 centimeters.
The planters must have one or more small drain holes so that excess water can drain off. Put potsherds on the holes. Then they do not clog.
So plant Georgines in the bucket
Fill the pots with nutritious, loose garden soil with a pH of 6.5. Immediately mix a long-term fertilizer or buy appropriately pre-fertilized soil in the garden market.
The dahlia tubers are placed with the root neck upwards in the pot so that up and down still have several inches of soil space.
Firmly press the ground and pour the dahlias so that the soil is neither too dry nor too humid.
The right location on terrace and balcony
Choose a warm, sheltered location. To be on the safe side, you should secure large-flowered dahlia varieties with buttresses so that the flowers do not break off.
Like all Georgians, dahlias in pots are only allowed outside when no minus temperatures are expected.
Maintain dahlias in the pot properly
Georgines prefer uniform moisture. In blazing sun, the plants have a higher water requirement. Therefore check the moisture content of the soil regularly.
Fertilizing is only necessary if you have used older garden soil. Check the flowers for pest infestation.
To extend the flowering time, always cut out the flowers that have died.
Tips & Tricks
Some hobby gardeners overwinter their dahlias in the pot. This is not advisable because the tubers easily rot or dry out. It is better if you pick the dahlia bulbs out of the bucket in autumn and store them in a suitable place until spring.
