Compost is an excellent fertilizer for Thujas and other plants

Thuja fertilize - judgment is required

Thuja is a very undemanding plant of the conifer family. Therefore, frequent fertilization is not only superfluous, but even harmful. What do you need to consider if you want to fertilize a Thuja hedge? Which fertilizer is suitable and when should you fertilize?

When is fertilizer from Thuja necessary?

Thuja prefers a loose soil that should not be too nutritious. Therefore, you should never overdo it with fertilizer. If you use fertilizer from the gardening market, be sure to follow the instructions and reduce the dosage rather something. Under no circumstances should you give more than listed on the box.

Fertilizing is really necessary only in very young plants. Even if the hedge looks a bit miserable or has yellow and transparent needles, fertilizing can be helpful.

Feed for the first time

If you have bought and planted Thuja in the bale, you do not fertilize in the first year. These plants are already sufficiently supplied with nutrients.

With root-thinned Thujen you wait two to three weeks with the first fertilization. Then new fine roots have already formed that are able to take up the fertilizer.

The right season to fertilize Thuja

It is best if you fertilize the tree of life in the spring. For slow-release fertilizer is recommended. Later in the year you can make another fertilization in late summer. In autumn or the cold season, you should no longer fertilize, since the stimulated by the additional nutrients new shoot before the winter does not harden enough. The shoots freeze then in cold winters.

Fertilizer for the tree of life

In the trade you get special fertilizer for conifers, which is well suited for Thujen. It is often offered as a liquid fertilizer. This form of application is the simplest and can be distributed very evenly.

Also blue grain is often recommended. With blue seed, however, it must be ensured that the fertilizer must be administered approximately 14 days before the new shoot, since it needs until it penetrates to the roots of the tree of life. Blue seed fertilization must be done twice a year if it is to help.

You can not go wrong if you give Thuja mature compost or mature manure in the spring and gently work it gently into the soil.

This is how you fertilize Thuja properly

Whatever fertilizer you give, make sure that the soil is moist. Emergency, go with the watering can over the floor first. The fertilizer works faster on moist soil and does not burn the fine roots so fast.

Follow the dosage instructions. With blue grain you need about 50 grams per square meter.

After fertilizing, pour the hedge from Thuja with the watering can. As a result, the nutrients are released faster and can penetrate better into the soil.

When Thuja turns yellow

If the tree of life turns yellow, an over-fertilization can not be ruled out. The excess supply of nutrients causes chlorosis, which causes discoloration of the needles.

The danger of over-fertilization exists primarily with artificial fertilizers, which were not correctly dosed.

These fertilizers must never come into contact with the needles as they burn them.

Detect and treat magnesium deficiency

A bright discoloration of the needles of the tree of life often indicates a lack of magnesium. Appropriate fertilizers you get in the trade. Epsom salt is often recommended for this purpose. If you are not sure whether there is really a magnesium deficiency, consult a specialist.

Improve soil already when planting

In the first two years after planting, you do not need to fertilize Thuja if you have prepared the soil well in advance.

For this purpose, loosen it deeply and remove all thickening, stones, roots, etc. Mix the potting soil with mature compost, seasoned manure and / or horn shavings. Then the roots have enough nutrients from the beginning.

Also peat is suitable for improving the soil, but should be used for environmental reasons only in an emergency.

Fertilize with mulch covers

The best way to provide Thuja with enough nutrients is to create a mulch layer under the hedge. By doing this, you avoid over-fertilizing the tree of life. As mulching materials are suitable:

The application of a mulch cover has the additional advantage that the soil moisture is kept constant, because the water does not evaporate so quickly. In addition, the mulch keeps weeds away and saves you so much work.

The mulch cover is ideally laid out every spring and, if necessary, renewed in the fall.

Tips

Do not fertilize Thuja with fresh compost or manure. Use only mature fertilizer because of the risk of over-fertilization and the possibility of burning the roots.
