More edible than toxic
Canna is considered slightly toxic. The only plant parts that are slightly toxic are the leaves and stems. The toxins protect the plant from pest feeding. Especially pets like cats should not eat too much!
The thick rhizomes of the flower tube are very strong and edible. They taste sweet and reminiscent of sweet potatoes. Similarly, the flowers can be eaten, for example, as a decorative accompaniment to salads and dishes.
Tips & Tricks
The tubers of Canna should be cooked for several hours for consumption. Generally, the long cooking is not worthwhile. It is better to divide and plant the tubers to obtain new cannabis plants.
