Is it allowed to compost boxwood?
Boxwood is a shrub very popular for cutting hedges and creative cuts. Whether accurate hedgehog hedges, spheres, spirals or other structures: With a good secateurs, the evergreen plant can be designed as desired. But where is cut, of course, also waste from: So where with the clippings?
Chop up boxwood thoroughly
In general, clippings from the garden are predestined for disposal on the compost heap, after all, it is an ecological raw material, which is fed to the natural cycle. However, Buchs decomposes extremely slowly, as evidenced by the very long green leaves. To speed up the composting of plant parts, you should follow these tips:
Only healthy plant material belongs to the compost
However, both composting and mulching are recommended only for healthy plants! Buchs, who is affected by fungal diseases such as the infamous instinctual death (caused by the fungus Cylindrocladium buxicola) or by pests - especially the introduced boxwood cedar - is by no means on the compost or mulch on garden beds! Dispose of this clippings, packed airtight, with household waste. Do not throw it into the bio-bin (because its content is also composted!) And do not throw it away in collection points such as the local recycling center. Here, especially for the Buchsbaumzünsler the danger that the animals can spread further. However, some recycling centers have already set up closed containers specifically for such hazardous biological waste: inquire in advance whether this is also the case for you in the region.
Tips
Incidentally, Buchs is also very suitable as a mulch material for ornamental and Nutzbeete, as long as you chop it well and possibly with other materials (such as the already mentioned grass clippings) mix.
