Sow beechnuts - Tips for growing new beeches
Quite simply, it's not easy to pull books out of beechnuts. Above all, you need a lot of patience until the first successes show. However, later you can be even more proud of your self-seeded beech in the garden.
The individual steps to sow beechnuts
Find germinable seeds
Pick the best ripe but still closed fruits directly from the tree. Try on other beechnuts to see if the seeds are white and really ripe.
Even if you only want to grow a beech, you should collect at least 30 beechnuts, because not all will germinate later. Select only the thickest specimens.
Put the beechnuts in a bowl of water. Only the fruits that sink down are suitable for reproduction. The others do not contain seeds.
Beechnuts have a germ inhibition
Bucheckern must be dark and cool for some time. They only drive out after several weeks.
The germ inhibition is a protection of nature, so that the seeds only rise when it is warm enough outside again.
If you do not want to sow right away, it's best to store the beechnuts outside in the ground and cover them with a thick layer of beech leaves. Protect the seeds from mice and squirrels.
Prepare the nursery
Bucheckern germinate best in the same soil in which the mother plant has stood.
In the garden, you create similar conditions when you mix garden soil with chopped beech leaves, pine needles and some sand.
To protect against animals that like to consume the slightly poisonous beechnuts, create a wire mesh around the seed.
Sow beechnuts
Insert the released seeds with the tip down several centimeters deep into the prepared soil. Cover the seeds with loose leaves.
In spring, some Eckern should be germinated. Maintain only the strongest plantlets until they are large enough to be transplanted to the final location.

Growing a new beech is easier and faster if you dig up freshly germinated small beech seedlings in the spring and plant them in your own garden.
