The cultivation of watermelon in the greenhouse

Watermelons for commerce are mostly imported from countries such as Spain, Hungary or Turkey. The warmer climate of these growing areas can also be simulated in the local greenhouse.

The preference of young plants

In order to be able to harvest fresh and juicy watermelons from your own greenhouse, you must bring the seeds into the ground in time in the spring.So that the plants can be planted in the greenhouse from about mid-May, the sowing on the windowsill must happen about four weeks before. Make sure to place the melon seeds individually in a small potty or in a peat pot as soon as possible. This saves you from pricking early and thus spares the very sensitive roots of the young melon plants.

Refine the watermelons for even better yields

You do not necessarily have to refine the watermelons, but this horticultural refinement can bring you higher yields and protect you from various melon diseases. As a base for refining is usually used a young plant of fig leaf gourd. By means of an ablation with opposite tongue, the two plants are carefully connected to each other. After a few days, the top part of the fig leaf gourd can be removed. After a little more time you can then separate the original melon root, so that no more pathogens can penetrate into the plant. The greatest advantage of this approach is not only the better water and nutrient supply of the grafted plant, but also in an effective protection against root diseases.

Give the watermelon in the greenhouse room to tendrils

The shoots of a watermelon like to grow in the direction of light and heat. In the greenhouse you need a climbing aid, which you can build yourself from the following materials:

Build a sufficiently stable trellis for the watermelons, which can also carry increasingly heavy fruit to maturity. If necessary, you can put under the tendrils hanging on the tendrils also small tables or wooden pegs as a shelf.

Watermelons like it not only warm, but also evenly moist. In the greenhouse, the soil substrate can also be kept moist in a pot more easily than in the field.
