The ideal location for blackberries in the garden
Wild blackberries often grow relatively undemanding on partially shaded to sunny slopes on forest and meadow margins. However, blackberries in the garden should preferably be planted in a sheltered location without waterlogging.
Prepare the soil before planting
Blackberries prefer a deep and humus rich soil. Sandy and clay-rich locations should therefore be loosened up and deep-digged before planting blackberries with fresh compost. However, if there is a risk of waterlogging, a drainage layer with sand or gravel is recommended.
Build a trellis for climbing blackberries
While tall, awesome blackberries only need a distance of two meters to each other, climbing varieties should be able to accommodate about four meters. A trellis for blackberries has the advantage that the individual tendrils and fruits are better reached by the sunlight and can be better dried by the wind after rain phases. As a wind and frost protected location for blackberries, there are squares in front of sunlit house walls. Ideally, the blackberry trellis can be kept at a distance of about one meter parallel to the wall of the house.
