If the bougainvillea does not bloom, it can have different causes
The longed-for Bougainvillea bloom is missing - what to do?
The main reason for cultivating a bougainvillea is for most hobby gardeners probably their beautiful flowers. If this does not want to adjust itself, that is of course a problem. Below, read what the reasons might be - and how to fix them.
The peculiarities of bougainvillea flowers
Bougainvilleas are also called driftwoods - for the intense, gorgeous color spectacle in red, purple, orange or white, which makes the creeper from the Andes so popular, namely the three bracts are responsible, which surround the actual, rather inconspicuous flowers. As decorative as these structures are, they are as sophisticated as they are. To lure them out, they need a lot of light and warmth, according to their subtropical home. But even the right substrate at its base can be crucial for their willingness to flower.
So keep in mind:
Is the location sunny and warm enough?
In view of the large light and heat hunger of the bougainvillea, you should first check the location conditions in the absence of flowering. Does he exhaust the sunshine offer as completely as possible? If possible, place your bougainvillea in a south-facing location, the best of which is, of course, a conservatory with a panoramic sun cover. But sun is often not enough for the beauty of the Andes - heat is at least as crucial for flower formation. Get it as warm as possible, not only during the day, but also at night.
Is the substrate pas put together?
The soil in which you place your bougainvillea is also essential for its prosperity and the development of flowers. The best is a peat-free pot plant soil, which you enrich with permeability-promoting substances. This can be for example quartz sand or lava granules. To give the substrate a permanent nutritional base, you can also add a small amount of horn shavings to it. Even clay can do the base good.
Fertilizing can help
If all the basic requirements are right, you can provide your bougainvillea with extra flower-boosting fertilizer. In principle, you should give her a phosphate-containing fertilizer every two weeks from spring to late summer.
Do not pour too much
If the bougainvillea does not want to bloom, do not try to water it any more - risking waterlogging, which is more of an obstacle to the plant's all-round thriving. Of course, the base should not be dried out either. In that case, of course, the watering can be helpful.
Delayed budding after hibernation?
If you watch your bougainvillea in the spring and she simply does not want to give you the flowers you are looking for, then the past overwintering may be responsible for your hesitancy. If the bougainvillea has too little light in its winter quarters, the sprouting may be delayed in the following growing season. So be patient here - just give your grandeur more time and continue to care for your preferred environment.
