A tree trunk can be wonderfully used for various construction projects, for example as a support beam for the new, covered terrace or set up as a decoration in the living room. There are several ways to anchor the trunk safely in the ground. Note, however, especially indoors, on terraces or balconies, that the statics should not be overloaded.
Let tree trunk into the earth
A very simple method is to let a long tree trunk directly into the ground. So that the trunk stands stable and holds securely, about one third of its length must disappear in the ground. The soil is then solidified well, for example with a vibrator. However, the problem with entering the tree trunk into the soil is that dead wood (which is, after all) is very quickly attacked by decay fungi and bacteria in contact with always damp soil, which is why such a construction does not have too long a life likely.
Protect wood against rot
However, there are ways to improve the durability of the wood and delay the rot. Part of this is that you should only use hardwood such as oak or beech for such a project - these woods are much more resilient and therefore rot slower. Of soft wood such as spruce, fir or pine is to be advised against it - also fruit tree wood and especially birch rot very quickly. Furthermore, there are several ways to protect the wood against moisture:
Concrete tree trunk
Who wants to play it safe, concretes the tree trunk in the ground. However, even with this method, the wood is not completely protected against moisture, as the foundation also absorbs moisture and passes it on. It is better, you lock the trunk a few inches above the foundation, so that the wood does not even come into contact with the ground. In addition, the concrete area could become a problem a few years later, as it is very difficult to remove. Possibly the tree trunk above ground has already long since rotted and the concrete foundation still holds out and makes it difficult for the realization of another construction project in the same place.
