Hibernate trees - This winter shelter makes sense

If possible, only species of trees should be planted in the garden that are sufficiently hardy for the respective region. If this is not the case, these trees should be cultivated in pots and placed over the winter months according to their needs - such as in a cold room or, for exotic woody plants, in warmer temperatures.

Winter protection for winter-proof trees

But even hardy trees benefit from certain protective measures that can be used, for example, to minimize or even prevent damage caused by dry frost. Even flat-rooters are endangered in cold, but snow-free winters, because their roots can freeze. The latter protect you by spreading a thick layer of mulching material on the tree disc or covering it with fir or spruce branches. Trunks and branches can be protected against frost damage with a lime paint, this measure is especially recommended for fruit trees in exposed, very sunny locations.

Tips

Trees in the pot, even if they are hardy, need a good winter protection. Place the pot on an insulating base (wood or styrofoam), place it on a warming wall and, if necessary, cover the tree with a cold protection fleece.
