You still have lots of battens and squared timbers left over from your last building project and you're not sure what to do with them? We have some ideas for you here, because the woods are great for use as a substructure for an artificial stream.
Versatile wood
Wood is a very versatile material, with which all kinds of exciting construction projects can be realized. For example, you can use machined and untreated wood for composting, raised beds or garden furniture - or as the basis for a babbling brook on your own property. There are many great ideas for this:
In particular, if you just had to fell a few trees, the tree trunk stream is recommended as an unusual garden decoration. Unless, of course, you want to make wood logs for the stove. In addition, wood can be used not only for the construction of the actual creek, but also or instead for its lifelike decoration - in the form of thick branches, for example, which form the barrages.
The choice of the right kind of wood
To make sure you enjoy your wood stream for a long time, you should use sturdy and resistant wood species for the construction. Softwoods such as birch, poplar and willow are less weather-resistant. These rotting under the influence of water within a very short time and therefore require a very good moisture protection. Hardwood, however, are much more resistant and should therefore be preferred. These include species such as beech, oak, walnut or maple. However, these types of wood have a serious disadvantage: They are significantly more expensive than spruce & Co.
Protect wood from moisture
In order not to break the budget for building a wooden stream, you can use soft wood - and have to protect it very well from moisture. This can be done by the use of wood preservatives, where you should use only paints and varnishes without toxins. Otherwise, the poison could be washed out and damage the fish in the pond. But even without a fish pond such toxic substances have no place in a biotope. If the wood is used only as an invisible subframe, then the cover is recommended with a good pond liner. Be sure to place a fleece underneath, so that any wood splinters do not tear the film and make it leaky.
Tips
Not only dead wood can be used for the design of a stream. Some trees, such as willows or alders, love the moisture on the banks of the stream and can therefore be wonderfully planted in the garden on such.
