Avocado: The best way to grow is via seed kernels
Although it is not very likely that mature fruits will grow from home-grown avocados under Central European climatic conditions, nevertheless the breeding of the tropical plant can pay off. With its elliptical, up to 15 centimeters long and dark green leaves, the avocado plant looks very different and is a real gem for every living room or conservatory.
For lush growth and a healthy plant: fertilize avocado properlyIncrease avocado over the seed kernel
The simplest way is to multiply an avocado from the seed kernel. There are two methods for this: In the more common water method, the core is first placed in a water glass to form roots, before being planted in suitable soil. But also the second method promises a good success: Put the core into an earth-filled flower pot and keep the substrate evenly moist. But do not lose patience: An avocado needs, depending on the variety and size of the core, several weeks to months before the first tender shoots are seen.
Pull avocado from a cuttings
Unusually, but still possible is the breeding of an avocado from a cutting. Avocados should be cut regularly to branch out and form a lush shrubbery. You do not need to throw the capped tip away, you can use it to breed another tree. But you need a lot of patience, because the propagation over a cutting takes longer than the seed kernel. In addition, this method is more complicated.
Plant breeding succeeds from a cutting:
Rooted cutting in a water bath
Place the cutlery in a glass filled with stale, room-warm water and place it in a light, sheltered location. Be sure to periodically renew the water and periodically rinse with a few drops of an auxin mixture (which are herbal growth hormones, supplemented with vitamins and available at every garden center). It may take a few months before the first roots form.
Tips & Tricks
The auxin mixture ensures that the cuttings get enough nutrients and do not throw off their leaves. They are also referred to as "root rubs" and can be easily made by yourself. Dissolve 1 g of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in acetone and fill the mixture with two liters of water. Finished!
