The enchantingly beautiful oleander with a long, dark green leaves and the delicate flowers is a real feast for the eyes. No wonder that this shrub is often cultivated as an ornamental plant. Since the rather demanding plant is preferably kept in buckets due to its lack of winter hardiness, brown spots on the leaves are not uncommon, often due to care mistakes. But they can also be a symptom of widespread oleander cancer.

The oleander cancer is caused by Pseudomonas bacteria, which frolic in the juice paths of the shrub. Since almost all oleanders are infected in principle, an outbreak of the disease is not even so unusual. A first sign of an outbreak are stunted flowers and buds that either do not break open or even turn black and then burst. Later, brown spots appear on the leaves, which also break up. On the shoots, however, show the typical cancerous growths.
Only the scissors helps against oleander cancer
There is no remedy for oleander cancer, except one: a sharp pair of scissors. Cut infected plant parts away generously, with a strong infestation you can put the affected oleander on the stick. This means you cut it to just above the ground.As a result, the plant will be healthy again, but you have to do without flowering for at least one year.
Other causes of brown spots
However, brown spots on the leaves do not always have to be an indication of oleander cancer, other causes may also be considered. A so-called leaf margin necrosis - this is characterized by a brown leaf margin and brown spots - for example, is an indication of overfertilization. Although this ensures a rather ugly appearance of the plant, but otherwise harmless. Furthermore, incorrect wintering - especially if it is too dry and / or too warm - can lead to brown discoloration on the leaves. Make sure to pour oleander well in winter and to overwinter it at about 5 ° C and as bright as possible.
Tips
