Plant an avocado properly

Have you already sprouted your avocado core and first roots are already showing? Then it's time to plant the seed in a pot of soil. But do not worry, you can also put a not pre-germinated core right into the ground. With the help of this guide, you can easily plant your seed kernel.

Use the right soil

First of all, you need the right soil. Avocados love loose, air-permeable soil, which should not be too salty. Most plants can cope with conventional flower or palm soil very well, but also a 1: 1 mixture of potting soil and sand or peat has proven very successful. The avocado should be repotted every two years at the latest while the earth is exchanged.

So plant the seed kernel

Take a plant pot that is not too small (preferably made of clay) and fill it with the prepared substrate about five centimeters below the edge. Now place the seed core with the flattened (or rooting) side in it and carefully pile up more soil around the core. The seed should still be about two-thirds out of the earth. Gently squeeze the substrate and spray the core with water. Pouring by jug is rather not recommended, because on the one hand the substrate can be washed away with it and on the other hand too much water comes to the core.

Why germination in a water bath brings no benefits

The often practiced pre-germination in a water bath brings no benefits for the avocado, quite the opposite. From experience it can be said that nuclei germinate in the soil usually grow faster than pregerminated - in addition nuclei tend in the water bath to mold and thus to rot. One reason for this is, for example, the picking with a toothpick, which injures the nucleus and can infect germs.

Alternative cultivation for balcony or garden owners

You can also greatly simplify planting an avocado core if you have a balcony with geraniums or a garden with shrubs. Just put the core in the earth under the geraniums or under a bush and let things run their course. Due to the shady cookie, the soil is always humid in these locations (especially as geraniums must be watered frequently) and therefore optimal for avocado seeds. However, this method only promises success if it is warm enough - ergo at the earliest from May until August at the latest, after all, you still have to add the germination time. If the nucleus is split and a small plant has grown, you can dig it out in time for the winter and plant it in a clay pot.
