Aronia shrubs hardly need to be cut
The aronia grows by nature already well branched, also it does not tend - like so many other berry bushes - to proliferate. Therefore, it does not really have to be cut. However, a cut can contribute to a better branching and, moreover, it is indispensable if the aronia shrubs grow together to form a dense hedge.
Aronia is best pruned in winter
Many flowering shrubs should be pruned immediately after flowering. However, this is not possible with the Aronia, after all, it is a fruit-bearing shrub. For this reason, the best possible time is the late autumn or early winter, when all the fruits have been harvested and the plant is no longer in the juice.
Superstructure cut for better branching
Immediately after setting the plant and in the first few years you can perform a so-called construction cut. In the process, closely spaced shoots are cut out and the basic drive is shortened. In this way, the shrub will branch out more and form more side shoots. Young plants should be pruned to develop as many branches as possible and eventually develop a beautiful crown over time.
Rejuvenation cut in older aronia bushes
On the other hand, if your aronia shrubs are getting a bit old, we recommend a rejuvenation cut. This is especially useful if no flowers are formed within a very wide shrub. In a rejuvenation cut, you remove the oldest main drives and shorten individual basic drives. This cut will stimulate your shrubs to regrow and increase fruiting.
