Overwinter an apple tree
Apple trees come in many dew varieties around the globe. As they are generally more sensitive to heat and drought than winter cold periods, wintering of mature trees is usually not a problem.
Weak spots for the apple tree in winter
A healthy apple tree tolerates short-term temperature drops to minus 25 degrees in winter without major problems. However, there may be several reasons for increased vulnerability in winter:
If possible, an apple tree should not be grafted until shortly before the onset of winter if the seam in the bark is to grow together before the degrees of frost. The winter is basically the right time for a cut, but this should only be done at mild temperatures from January to March.
Overwinter apple tree in the pot
A young seedling or a tree pulled from a core can also be cultivated in the pot on the balcony or the terrace. However, the tree should be planted in a generously sized pot. Nevertheless, as potted plants may endanger the roots in winter due to low temperatures, it may be advisable to spend a protected winter.
Do not over-hibernate, warm or dry
Since the apple tree is not a typical houseplant, it must not be overwintered as such. The tree should therefore not be in the pot directly in the warm room. For wintering, a moderately cold location is more suitable, such as a shed or an unheated cold frame. The apple tree needs sufficient water and light even in winter. As an alternative, an apple tree in the pot over the winter can also be sunk in a sufficiently large hole in the ground, so that the roots are protected from the winter cold.
Tips & Tricks
In fact, minus degrees only make an apple tree dangerous if the temperature drops after the start of the apple blossom and when the apple shoots out. But you can not influence this anyway, if it is not a tree in the pot.
