Aloe vera - rediscover old houseplant
In the cultural history of various peoples Aloe vera was considered a medicinal plant. They used their leaves as a remedy for indigestion, for wound healing and skin care. After a period of oblivion, Aloe vera enjoys great popularity again.
The aloe from the drylands of Africa is a very frugal plant. The cosmetics industry processes large quantities of aloe juice and aloe gel. For this purpose, real aloe is grown all over the world.
In Germany, aloe vera can be cultivated as a houseplant, as it tolerates no frost. It is particularly suitable for full sun locations. The hot summer months can spend aloe vera outdoors. As soon as it gets colder, it has to be brought into the house. It likes to spend the winter at 10-15 ° C, but can also spend the whole year in a heated room.
Important to the location and ground
Above all, aloe vera needs a lot of light for healthy growth. If the plant is to retain its green color permanently, it must not stand in the blazing sun, where its fleshy leaves turn reddish to brownish.
The following mixture ensures good water permeability of the soil:
Pour sparingly and fertilize
Aloe vera should only be poured when the substrate is completely dry. Summer outdoor plants can tolerate a bit more water. During the winter break, watering is very rare and fertilizing is completely stopped. Anyone who pampers their aloe vera regularly can save themselves fertilizing.
Multiply aloe vera
Aloe vera can be multiplied by means of natural shoots or from the cuttings. This is carefully cut off with a sharp knife at the base and allowed to dry for a few days. Place the offshoots in the moist soil and set the containers sun-protected and moderately bright.
Tips
You can encourage aloe vera to flower by hibernating at around 12 ° C from November to February.
