Sooner or later, most home gardeners are faced with the decision to clear a tree. High-growth maple species are often affected because their growth was underestimated. Sometimes the infestation with Verticillium wilt or sooty disease makes the precipitation inevitable. What remains is a tree stump and massive roots that kick out happily. This guide explains how to successfully excavate maple roots.

Flat root with a trunk diameter of up to 30 cm can be removed manually. Maple trees with a predominantly flat heart root system belong to this category. Already during the precipitation of the tree, remember that a trunk at least shoulder-high remains standing. To dig out the roots with little effort:

If you already take into account the growth of maple roots during planting, you will not get thick root cords into the enclosure in later years. By providing the planting pit with a root barrier, you are at least setting narrow limits to the spreading urge.
Root barriers consist of various impermeable, non-erodible materials in different thicknesses. To withstand maple roots, we recommend a thickness of 2 mm. The planting pit is lined 50 to 60 cm deep with the Geoil. The ends are connected with special brackets. Important for the skilled installation is that the root barrier protrudes 5 to 10 cm from the ground.
Tips
A colorful underplant flatters the appearance of maple trees. Sometimes the dense root system leaves no gap to plant beautiful groundcover on the tree-pulley. It does not detract from the further growth of the tree if you remove one or another near-surface root.
