The roots of the cypress
Cypress trees are flat-rooters, where the root system develops over time several main roots and a host of smaller secondary roots. It is therefore important that the trees are planted at a sufficient distance from walls, paths and neighboring land.
Cypresses are flat-rooters
Cypresses belong to the Flachwurzlern. The roots do not reach very deep into the ground, but spread below the ground.
While the rule of thumb for deciduous trees is that the root ball is roughly the size of the treetop, it is slightly different in cypress trees. Here, the crowns are usually quite narrow, so that the root system goes beyond its circumference.
Maintain sufficient planting distance to walls and paths
Over time, the roots of the cypress grow stronger and there are many small secondary roots. The secondary roots penetrate into small holes in the masonry and can thus damage a house wall, wall or a foundation considerably. This can be particularly problematic for hedges, as they are planted very densely. The roots often spread even more.
The main roots can become very thick, lifting plates from garden paths or pavement. The foundations and walls also show cracks when the cypress roots become too dense and strong. In some cases, the roots even go beyond retirement benefits.
It is therefore essential to have sufficient planting distance
to avoid later trouble. At least a meter, better still 1.50 meters should be between cypress and walls.
Avoid trouble with the neighbors
Not every neighbor likes it when a fast-growing cypress hedge grows close to the property boundary. These are worried not only because of the height of the trees, but also because of the roots of the cypresses.
Therefore, before planting a cypress or cypress hedge with your community, find out what regulations apply at your location. As a result, many neighborhood disputes can be avoided right from the start.
Tips
Since cypresses form a pronounced root system over time, it is difficult to replant them. In older trees there is a high risk that the roots will be damaged irreparably. Transplant only trees that have not been in place for more than four years.
