Which height do cypresses reach?
In their home in the Mediterranean, California and other sunny, warm regions some cypress species reach a height of 30 meters. In our latitudes, cypresses are far from so high, as the climate is more inhospitable. Nevertheless, a cypress can grow to a stately height.
How high is a cypress in the garden?
In the garden, the cypress can easily be up to ten meters high. For hedges, care is taken that the trees do not shoot too high. Cypress hedges are usually between two and four feet high.
Cypresses are very fast growing
In a favorable location with good nutrient supply, cypresses grow very fast. Between 40 and 70 centimeters is the annual increase, both in height and in width. There are even species that grow up to a meter per year.
By cutting the cypress, growth can be additionally stimulated. A regular pruning ensures that the trees grow denser and not so fast down below. This plays a role especially in the privacy of cypress hedges.
Limit the height of a cypress hedge
Cypress hedges are usually not so high, but nice and dense. Therefore limit the height of the hedge by regular pruning.
Even if the hedge has not yet reached the desired final height, you should cut it once a year. You cut back the upper shoots by a third. Between 20 and 40 centimeters, the pruning should fail.
At first, we see ugly interfaces. However, these are swiftly covered by new sprouting side branches. By pruning you stimulate another branch of the cypress.
How high can a cypress be?
Do not let the cypress as a single tree or hedge become too tall. In the individual communities, there are rules on what height individual trees in the garden or cypress hedges may have when growing near neighboring properties. For safety's sake, inform yourself in advance.
Tips
Due to their rapid growth, cypresses are also called "neighbor's fright". Keep a sufficiently large planting distance to neighboring properties, so that your neighbor does not feel disturbed by a too high hedge or a single tree.
