Those who live in cool locations, have space on the windowsill and want to ensure their sweetcorn harvest, are advised to bring this plant forward. Can a lot go wrong and how is it done right?
Advantages of pre-breeding
In the field, sweetcorn is sown only from mid / end of May. Impatient gardeners may prefer it. The biggest advantage is that the seeds can germinate and grow up under the watchful eye at home.
Once sowed too early in the field, the corn can quickly enter when exposed to frost. The preference prevents that. Furthermore, home grown plants can be used, they later grow faster and are therefore faster for flower and fruit training.
Prefer your home from the end of March / beginning of April
Irrespective of the variety, sweetcorn is brought forward between the end of March and the end of April. By the beginning of May at the latest you should sow the seeds at home, in order to be able to expose vigorous young plants in the field in the middle / end of May.
Sow the seeds
Before sowing, the dried seeds are pre-swollen in water for 8 to 10 hours. It would be ideal to place the seeds in a thermos with 20 ° C warm water.
