The uncomplicated cultivation of sugar peas
Whether raw or cooked, in a salad or in a stew - sugar peas from our own garden are a welcome snack in the summer. The cultivation is worthwhile, because sugar peas are not only undemanding, but also extremely easy to clean.
The basics decide: location and ground
The sugar pea plants prefer to grow in a full sun. There they thrive most splendidly and produce lots of pods. In addition, they are content with a partially shaded location. A temperate climate is enough for them. But beware: After three years, the location should be changed.
Sugar peas put on the ground wishes that are usually easy to fulfill. These include the following features:
From sowing to harvest
Sugar peas are sown directly in the field between the end of March and mid-April. Care is taken to a sowing depth of 5 cm and a distance between the individual plants of at least 3 cm. Right on the sowing day, trellises should be put into the ground.
Sugar peas require little care from their gardeners. At the beginning and in longer dry periods they should be watered regularly. A fertilizer is not necessary. However, the later yield of a gift with rock flour or compost opposes. Once the plants have reached a size of 10 cm, they are accumulated in the root area with soil to be more stable.
Between mid-May and early June, the flowering phase of the sugar peas was followed, and the pods in mid / late June are ready for harvest. They are always harvested before maturity, if they are narrow and tender.
Tips & Tricks
In order to protect the sugar peas from fungal diseases, it is advisable to plant them in mixed culture. Ideal neighbors in their immediate vicinity are, for example, lettuce, kohlrabi, carrots, radish and radishes.
