Grow zucchini on the balcony
The undemanding zucchini is an ideal vegetable for the balcony. Some varieties require little space and are therefore suitable for cultivation in pots. With the right conditions, you'll get your balcony zucchini off to a good start.
The right vessel
While a larger gap in the bed is sufficient for growing zucchini in the garden, the balcony zucchini needs a large enough container. In order for the plant to spread well, it should be a bucket of at least 15 l capacity. A good size is a bucket with about 40 cm in diameter. Flower boxes are not suitable, they offer the plant neither space nor support.
The larger the bucket the more productive the plant is. However, you have to keep in mind that the bucket becomes quite heavy due to the irrigation water. If you can not estimate how sustainable your balcony is, you better choose a smaller bucket.
To avoid waterlogging, a drain hole in the floor is necessary. If you cover it with potsherds or stones, the irrigation water can run off without flushing the earth out.
A sunny place
On the balcony, the zucchini needs a location that is at least for a few hours in the sun. Ideally, this is the south balcony.
Earth, fertilizing, watering
To fill the planter, you use nutrient-rich soil. In addition, you can mix in compost. In addition, horn shavings and liquid fertilizers are suitable for nutrient supply.
Zucchini plants need a lot of water. Regular watering is important just during flowering and in midsummer.

Fruits and flowers
If the zucchini is planted, it takes about 6 - 8 weeks to harvest the first fruits. Best taste the young fruits and with a premature crop you increase the further yield. Until then, the edible, white or yellow flowers adorn your balcony.
Tips & Tricks
Instead of a planter you can also grow your zucchini in a disused paint bucket or bucket. It is important that the vessel is well cleaned before use.
