Dryness is the top priority in seed harvesting
A lemon balm makes its seeds in 2 millimeters small Klausen. It is a decaying fruit, as is typical of labiates. The seeds in it are only ripe when the Klause turns brown. In the days before the seed harvest it should not have rained, because wet seeds mold faster. How to do it right:
Until sowing, the seed is stored in a glass with a screw cap. Add a piece of paper to absorb residual moisture. Stored dark and cool, the seeds are stable for over 3 years. Do not forget the label.
Proper preparation raises the germination - that's the way it works
The seeds of lemon balm are sensitive in terms of their germination behavior. This shortcoming manifests itself more drastically in the context of a direct sowing than in the cultivation behind glass. Germ numbers well below 50 percent are not uncommon even in the exemplary prepared bed. With the following pretreatment, you can noticeably increase the germination of seeds:
At this point you can finish the pretreatment by drying the seeds with a hair dryer until they are dispensable. Who wants to play it safe, fills the wet seed in a plastic bag. This comes for a week in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. Although the seeds of lemon balm are not cold germs, this stratification also contributes to the hardening.
Tips & Tricks
The imponderables of a direct sowing in the bed, are not only reduced in the context of perfect pre-treatment. Experienced hobby gardeners sow melissa in August or September. Although no harvest takes place in the same year, first-rate established seedlings will start the next season from April onwards.
