Pulling lemongrass is easier than expected

Do you appreciate the exotic-lemony taste and the characteristic note that gives lemongrass Asian dishes? If you would like to have always freshly harvested lemongrass on hand, you can pull the Asia-flavored without any problems yourself and harvest from the windowsill or balcony if necessary.

Rooted purchased stalks in a glass of water

Fresh lemongrass is available in many supermarkets or the Asia shop. Put some of the stems about five inches deep in water and place the jar in a warm and bright place. Already after about a week delicate sprouts begin to sprout. Once the roots have reached a length of two to three centimeters, you can put the lemongrass in a flower pot with nutrient-rich soil.

Pull lemongrass out of seeds

In any well-stocked plant trade you will get lemongrass seeds for self-cultivation. When sowing, proceed as follows:

New perennials through division

Maybe friends have a vigorously awake lemongrass shrub from which you can grow new plants by dividing. The right time for the division are the spring or fall, when the plant moves into the field or is brought back to the house for hibernation.

When dividing, be careful not to hurt the roots and bulbs as much as possible. Lemongrass is quite sensitive at these spots and damaged roots often do not grow new stalks.

Tips & Tricks

The germination rate of lemongrass is low and is only 40 to 60 percent. Therefore, the seeds can be spread relatively densely. Too tight seedlings can, as soon as they have reached a size of about ten centimeters, separate and pull in small pots.
