The lemon tree is a subtropical plant that was probably originally from the Himalayan foothills and brought to the Mediterranean by Arab traders. The numerous cultivars are propagated from seeds or cuttings and cultivated in gardens and plantations. In the temperate latitudes, the plant is often pulled as a container plant. The trees can flower and fruit all year round.

Which substrate does a lemon tree need?
ideal is a slightly acidic substrate, which consists of peat, mature compost and normal (also slightly loamy) garden soil. Expanded clay should be added to this mixture. Alternatively, you can also use commercially available citrus soil.
Can I plant the lemon tree in the garden?
Normally, lemons are not frost hardy and should therefore not be planted, but kept in a bucket. An exception is the so-called bitter lemon (Citrus trifoliata) and some of their hybrids, which are quite frost hardy. In wind-protected locations, however, planting is generally possible in the winegrowing areas.
Does the lemon tree thrive on the balcony or terrace?
Yes absolutely. Lemons - like all other Mediterranean plants - love fresh air. The plant can be outdoors from about late March / early May to early / mid-October, but should be protected at night from any cold spells with a fleece.
How do I plant a lemon tree?
Choose a (ceramic) pot whose circumference is about one-third larger than the treetop. Fill in as the lowest layer of small pebbles, then again about two to three inches of substrate. Now put in the bale and fill the pot with soil all around. Then sprinkle the tree vigorously.
When should the lemon tree be repotted?
At the latest when the roots are already growing out of the pot. Young plants are replanted once a year, older solitaires every two to three years.
Can I grow a lemon tree from seeds or cuttings?
Yes, you can use a lemon tree from the seeds of a fully ripe, fresh fruit as well as from a cuttings.
When does my lemon tree blossom?
Unless it is refined, its self-grown lemon tree will bloom for the first time in eight to twelve years at the earliest. Otherwise, a lemon tree blooms all year round and bears fruit at the same time.
Will I be able to reap fruit?
With sufficient care and adequate conditions you will probably be able to reap ripe fruits. Like all citrus plants, the lemon is a self-fruit.
Tips & Tricks
As with oranges, ripe lemons do not color until the weather is cool. Therefore, even green fruits can be fully ripe.
