Lemon trees are too cold in the Central European climate, so they should be cultivated in the tub. On the one hand, they do not get that big - a lemon tree can grow up to 10 meters high, in the bucket it reaches an average of 2 meters - that's a good thing, because the plant, which comes from a subtropical climate, should not hibernate outdoors, either on the balcony.

Which is why lemon trees can not hibernate outdoors

The lemon comes from a constantly hot, very sunny climate. As such, the plant does not tolerate frost, although some hybrids may be hardy. But not only the temperature prevents hibernation outdoors, the other winter weather conditions make it impossible. In winter, it is not only too cold, but too wet, too dark and too windy - all that lemons do not like at all and would just die off.

Although lemons need a cool winter, but it should not be too cold. Temperatures of about 10 ° C plus additional brightness due to extra installed plant lamps offer a lemon optimal conditions for wintering. An exception might be possible if you are lucky owner of a glazed balcony: In this case, you must, however, ensure that the lemon tree does not get drafts.

In summer, the lemon tree belongs to the balcony

In the warm season, however, you should treat your lemon tree to a sunny but sheltered and not drafty stand on the balcony. Lemons do not like to stand all year round in the summer, which is mainly due to the lack of air, but also on the filtered through window glass sunlight. Although the sensitive plants like no draft, but respond to the absence of any breeze also with leaf shedding. It would be ideal, if you call a south or at least a west balcony her own. The open season for lemons starts around mid to late May (the end of the saints) and ends with the last warm days in October.

Tips & Tricks

However, you should not leave your lemon tree in very bad weather or a cold front necessarily on the balcony - in such cases, it is advisable to bring the plant rather for a few hours or days in the protective living room.
