How do you get a lemon tree offshoot? - Tips for selection and breeding
Thanks to its vigor, a lemon tree is not that difficult to cultivate. If an adult plant already exists, you can simply multiply it by an offshoot - which is actually not a lemon tree offshoot, but rather a cutting.
Choose a suitable mother plant
However, before you start propagating your lemon tree, you should first select a suitable tree. Basically, you can get cuttings from each lemon, but then you will not always enjoy it. Like every breeder you should also select for good and bad qualities, d. H. a lemon tree with bad characteristics - little or no flowers and fruits, rather meager growth - is not suitable for cuttings. As a rule, the cuttings will have the same characteristics as the mother plant, since both plants are genetically identical.
The selection of the cuttings
Cuttings you win best when in the spring anyway the annual shape cut is due. So you kill two birds with one stone, because you have to cut the lemon tree in any case. In addition, spring and the beginning of the growing season are best suited for propagating cuttings - after all, the plants are now growing and thriving. The cultivation of the small tree should therefore succeed quite easily. And that's what perfect lemon tree cuttings must look like:
Slice the desired cuttings slightly diagonally - an oblique interface makes it easier for the plantlet to absorb water later on - and ensure that no residue or stub remains on the mother plant. Dip the cleavage interface into a rooting powder and then plant it in a small pot of seedling soil. Place the pot best on the windowsill in a light and sheltered (no drafts!) Space. You can also put a transparent plastic bag over it, which ensures high humidity and thus better rooting.
