Which ornamental grass species are suitable
Most ornamental grasses used to plant gardens are too warm and too dark in the home. But a few specimens are suitable as indoor plants. Here is a selection:
Location in the living room
Whichever grass you choose, the location you choose should be as bright as possible. A place directly at the window is ideal. It is important that the ornamental grass is not exposed to drafts and is not inferior to dry heating air in winter. All rooms are well suited with windows, but above all:
Care of the houseplant
Most ornamental grasses, which are suitable as indoor plants, need a high humidity. Therefore, it is worthwhile not only to water them regularly, but also to spray them - especially on hot summer days. Preferably use stale (low-calcium) water in a watering can!
In addition, ornamental grasses at home should be fertilized from time to time. It is sufficient to fertilize them sparingly every 2 to 4 weeks during their main growing season between April and September. For this purpose, conventional liquid fertilizer can be used for green plants. Also coffee grounds and cooled herbal teas are suitable for fertilizing the ornamental grasses.
Pests, overwinter and repot
Also part of the care include repotting and wintering. In winter you should offer your ornamental grass a warm place that is not directly above a heater. Check the plant regularly for infestation by pests such as scale insects. In the spring between February and March, a perfect time has come for repotting.
Tips
You are welcome to put your ornamental grass on the balcony from March / April to September. It is happy about the fresh air and the portion of sunlight. But get used to your ornamental grass slowly to the direct sun!
