Zamioculcas is poisonous for cats
The Lucky Feather (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an attractive, extravagant foliage plant that can be wonderfully cultivated both in the living room and in the conservatory. The evergreen plant with the typical, fleshy leaf ribs and numerous pinnate leaves is considered to be extremely easy to care for and robust. One drawback, however, is that the succulent plant originates from East Africa: It is slightly poisonous, both for humans and for cats and other animals.
Zamioculcas is only slightly toxic
Zamioculcas belongs to the arum family (Araceae) and, like many of its relatives, is poisonous. The calcium oxalate contained in all plant parts swells the mucous membranes and leaves a burning sensation. A medical treatment is usually not required, after all, the plant is only considered slightly toxic and therefore rather harmless. However, you should not let your cat nibble on the leaves, because - if the animal is not deterred by the very bitter taste - excessive consumption can lead to unnecessary pain and discomfort.
Protect cats from poisonous houseplants
Since cats like to nibble on green indoor plants and do not stop in front of poisonous specimens, you should either not even buy such plants or place them so that the animal does not get there. Do you have a room that the cat can not enter? This would be the right location for the Zamioculcas - provided that the other site conditions, in particular with regard to the lighting conditions, are also correct. Unfortunately, the up to one meter and higher waking lucky spring is not necessarily for a hanging storage, for example, in a traffic light.
Tips
Symptoms of poisoning usually appear immediately during consumption and then do not last long. If, however, some sap has got into your eyes, you should rinse them with plenty of clear water.
