Exotic and unusual: a yucca as a bonsai
A palm tree as bonsai? Many plant lovers might shake their heads in this idea in the negative. After all, palm trees are considered not to be cut-friendly at all and therefore not suitable for bonsai. These plants simply can not be kept small enough and do not form - which are the typical characteristics of a bonsai. Fortunately, the yucca "palm" does not belong to the palm species, but is an asparagus plant.
Which types of Yucca can be trained to bonsai?

To properly cultivate a yucca bonsai
In order for you to succeed and attract a beautiful yucca bonsai, you should cultivate the plant according to your natural needs.
Location and substrate
Yuccas, whatever it is, needs a bright, warm and sheltered location. Drafts and moisture do not tolerate these plants, by the way as well as a stand in the full sun: Such often leads to burns on the leaves. In terms of substrate, choose a nutrient-rich soil that is mixed with sand and expanded clay. Anyway, a good drainage is immensely important, but the plant does not tolerate waterlogging.
Pouring and fertilizing
Pour the yucca only moderately and preferably not penetrating. Excess irrigation water should be removed immediately. As a bonsai cultivated yuccas should be rarely or even not fertilized. The latter, however, is only possible if the plant is converted annually into fresh substrate.
Cutting and wire
Yuccas are very cut tolerant and drive out even after radical cuts repeatedly - but not in every case as hoped. To a certain extent, wiring is possible, but not on thick trunks and only on young shoots. In addition, most yuccas form only one trunk and no side shoots or branches. In this respect, the design possibilities in these cases are limited.
Tips
Pots of cultured yuccas should always be kept frost-free and cool in a non-heated room or conservatory at a maximum of 10 ° C. This is true even if it is actually a hardy species.
