How fast is cherry laurel?
The cherry laurel is one of the vigorous garden shrubs that, according to the motto: "Faster, higher, wider" quickly grow into dense sight protection hedges. Because of its strong growth, the wood must be cut regularly.

Most laurel cherry species evolve very fast, forming high and evergreen privacy screens within a few years. The growth per year can be up to fifty centimeters in good locations, so that the hedge one meter high at planting has already reached two meters in height after two years.

The cherry laurel does not just reach for the sky. Although a bit smaller, it also grows vigorously in width. Uncut, the shrub can grow up to 35 centimeters per year. If you own a large property that you would like to surround with a cherry laurel hedge, the enormous power of the bush is no problem. In small terraced gardens, however, the space can quickly become scarce due to the strong growth.
Keep the cherry laurel in check
Regular pruning allows you to limit the sprouting growth of cherry laurel. The cut should always be made with mechanical cutting tools, so that the beautiful leaves of the woodland are not affected. Through this care measure to accumulate enormous amounts of plant material, which you can deploy as a mulch under the hedge. Slowly rotting, this mulch layer suffocates weeds and protects the earth from drying out.
Do not plant too closely
So that the cherry laurel does not press other plants, you should plan sufficient distance to other plants and ways when setting the wood. In order to achieve good results when cutting all parts of the laurel cherry, you should add about fifty centimeters to the planned circumference.
Right variety choice
Even in small gardens, you do not have to do without the cherry laurel. Breeds such as Otto Luyken grow slower and are not as high as other varieties. They lend themselves well to low screen hedges or as attractive solitary or boundary plants.

Even a reset on the stick copes the laurel cherry easily. You can thereby rejuvenate overgrown shrubs and, in the future, limit too much growth by regularly pruning.
