The poinsettia is a perennial plant
In his homeland, the poinsettia grows for many years. It grows up to four meters high and often shows its colored bracts throughout the year.
In our latitudes, poinsettias are grown exclusively as indoor plants because they are not hardy. In addition, it is too bright here in summer. The Poinsettia is a short-day plant that needs less than twelve hours of light per day to form the characteristic bracts.
A poinsettia, however, can be kept here for several years and can blossom if you ensure the right site conditions and good care.
Keep the poinsettia alive after flowering
After flowering, make the poinsettia cooler if possible. You can easily put it on the balcony or plant it in the garden when the temperatures are high enough. Now is the best time to repot it.
During the summer season the poinsettia needs slightly less water. You can also reduce the fertilizer loads.
You do not have to cut it. Only when the plant is out of shape, shorten it. Remove the flowers and bracts.
How to reach a new bloom of the poinsettia
The bracts only develop new bracts if they have been darkened for some time. If the poinsettia is red again at Christmas, from November you must either put it in a dark room or cover it with a bag. He is not allowed to light for more than eleven hours a day for six to eight weeks a day.
