Venus flytrap - a profile
Discovery of the Venus flytrap
Since the Venus flytrap occurs only at a certain place, it is not surprising that the carnivorous plant was first mentioned in 1759. It was discovered within a radius of 100 kilometers around the US town of Wilmington.
Soon after becoming known this extraordinary plant triumphed around the world.
This led at times to the fact that the Venus flytrap was threatened with extinction. Meanwhile, the plant was also settled in northwest Florida. Since venus fly traps can be multiplied well, the supply of cultivated specimens is very large.
Poorly trained root system
The root system of a Venus flytrap is weak. First, a taproot grows, which stabilizes the plant. This forms back later.
The roots grow to a depth of up to 15 centimeters deep. If the aerial parts of the Venus flytrap die off, they often drive them out of the subterranean rhizomes.
So the Venus flytrap catches insects
The trappers have a red color that attracts insects. Settle on the trap, it works fast and closes the insect.
The prey is digested by a digestive secretion. The digestive process takes about ten days.
The folding trap can open up to seven times and then dies.
Tips
The Latin name of the Venus flytrap Dionaea muscipula is made up of the name of the Greek goddess Dione (mother of Venus) and the word for mousetrap.
