Harvest the seeds of a Venus flytrap - how it works!
You can multiply a venus flytrap by division or by seed. Seeds for Venus fly traps are available from specialized dealers. If you are already growing a plant, you can also harvest the seeds yourself. Since there is only one species of this carnivorous plant, the young plants remain sorted.

For the flower of a Venus flytrap to develop seeds, it must be fertilized. Normally this is done by insects, of which there are enough in the house.
If you want to make sure, you pollinate the flowers yourself. You will need a brush with fine bristles. If necessary, also a cotton swab.
Run the brush over the open flower of the Venus flytrap. Then stroke over the next flower. Repeat this until all the individual flowers have been fertilized.
When is the seed ripe?
The capsules with the seeds form when the flower is dried up. It will take some time though.
Once the seed pods are dry, the seed is ripe. The capsules contain a variety of black seeds.
So you harvest the seed
To harvest the seed of the Venus flytrap, you have several options. You can wrap the long-stemmed flowers with a plastic bag that you tie down.
It is also possible to cut off dried flowers.
The easiest way to do it is to place a flat plate under the flower. When the seed is ripe, it falls into the shell by tapping lightly.
Store cool and dark after harvesting
In order to grow new Venus fly traps from the seeds, you have to wait until spring.
In the meantime, store the seeds cool and dark. Since the seed only germinates when it has undergone a prolonged cold phase, place it in the refrigerator until sowing.
Cover the seeds in an opaque bag so they will not get any light.
Tips
Most growers of Venus fly traps cut off the flowers of the plant as soon as the approach develops. The plant needs strength for flowering. It then forms fewer traps.
