The Common Trumpet Tree (Catalpa bignonioides) is a deciduous, up to 18-meter tall deciduous tree, which in June / July boasts a sea of flowers of white, bell-shaped and very large flowers. But even outside flowering, the spreading tree is an ornament because of its large, heart-shaped leaves. Fortunately, the trumpet tree - this is not to be confused with the similar-sounding angel trumpet! - cut back very well.

The trumpet tree does not only tolerate a spirited cut very well, it is also recommended especially for young trees. The regular, sculpted cutting technique allows young trumpet trees to develop a beautiful, sprawling and lush crown, as well as producing more and larger leaves due to increased shoot growth. Older trees should be regularly rejuvenated by removing old and dead wood in favor of young, fresh shoots. This measure prevents a gradual blinding of the tree.
The optimal time
For a pruning are two possible appointments, both of which have specific advantages and disadvantages. It is usually recommended to cut the trumpet tree in early spring - even before the first shoot. However, you must be very careful, otherwise you will rob yourself of the beautiful summer bloom. Trumpet trees form their flower buds for the following year, namely already in the autumn before - and a pruning in spring carries the risk that then the flower fails. Instead, however, a cut directly after flowering and before the bud again, ergo in August, possible. This appointment is also better because Catalpa should be cut on a warm and dry day if possible.
Cut back the trumpet tree correctly
When cutting it is not enough just to cut back all shoots. You will soon regret such a measure because the trumpet tree will most likely form unsightly spider veins. It is better, however, to proceed according to the following scheme:
Only work with a sharp and disinfected cutting tool, as otherwise bacterial or fungicidal pathogens can penetrate through the now open wounds and cause great damage.
Why dare a headdress cut?
A so-called pruning tree - also called Entwipfeln - is always useful if the trumpet tree is not salvaged by a storm or frost damage or a fungal disease in any other way. You can cut the crown either to a few Leitäste or even only up to the trunk. However, after such a measure you need a lot of patience until a new crown has formed again. Incidentally, the leaves in the episode drift much larger and more lush again.
