Root depth of Thuja Brabant: How deep are the roots?

Thuja Brabant is a Flachwurzler. The root depth is therefore not as strong as in other plants that belong to the deep roots. Nevertheless, the tree of life can develop a very pronounced root. You should therefore take the later root depth into consideration when selecting your hedge.

Thuja Brabant is a Flachwurzler

Thuja Brabant originally grows in humid areas where the tree of life has a lot of surface water available. That's why the roots are not that deep.

However, over time the tree develops a very dense root system, which connects in the hedge with the roots of other Thujen. Especially with hedge plants, the root depth is sometimes larger than normal. The roots have to reach deeper layers of earth to get nutrients and water.

With a five-meter-high thuja you have to expect a root depth of 70 to 100 cm.

Consider root depth of Thuja Brabant when planting

The rooting depth is particularly important if you want to remove the hedge from Thuja-Brabant later. Digging by hand is not easy. Renting a small excavator will help, but the work may destroy the rest of the garden.

However, it is often sufficient to cut off the tree of life or the hedge to a stump and then raise it with a winch from the ground. Remains of the roots can remain in the soil. The decomposition takes a long time, but the Thuja does not drive out again.

Because of the pronounced root system, an older Thuja Brabant can hardly be transplanted. They do not get the roots undamaged from the ground.

Do the roots damage walkways and borders?

It can not be completely ruled out that pavement slabs and discounts are lifted through the roots of the Thuja Brabant. For masonry, this risk is lower.

But it takes time for the roots to spread so far. For safety's sake, choose a sufficient distance to paths and neighboring gardens.

Tips

The planting distance of Thuja Brabant to neighboring properties is regulated by the municipalities. Most of the distance between borders and roads must be as large as the Thuja later becomes high.
