Tips and tricks for propagating shrubs
The propagation of plants from their own garden is not only popular with experienced gardeners and crowned with success. Even as a hobby gardener, you can, for example, with the help of cuttings or sinkers clone your bushes, so to speak.
Can I multiply all shrubs myself?
Many shrubs can be multiplied quite well, others require some patience or tact. But it always pays to try it at least once. From self-collected seeds, however, you will not always get shrubs with the desired characteristics. On the other hand, you will get copies identical to the mother plant through cuttings or sinkers.
The propagation through cuttings
Cuttings can be cut from most shrubs. The late spring and summer months, from May to August, are ideal for propagating cuttings. Use very young, yet soft shoots, then these can easily rot. If, on the other hand, they are hard and already woody, it may take a long time for roots to form.
You may cut cuttings several times at intervals of a few days or you may use shoots with different degrees of lignification. With rooting powder you can stimulate rooting. This is especially useful for hardened shoots often.
The increase by sinkers
The simplest is the increase by lowering. All you have to do is deflect a flexible shoot onto the ground, sprinkle it with soil and possibly weigh it down with a rock. The future young plant will continue to be supplied by the mother plant. After rooting, it can be separated from it.
Propagation by sowing
If you want to propagate shrubs by sowing, then you can buy the seeds or even pick them up from their plants. However, since the seeds carry characteristics of both parent plants, the appearance is not always predictable. Purchased seeds are usually carefully bred and tested. Sown according to the package instructions, you will receive the desired shrubs.
