Whether a shrub or tree is too close to the fence is a frequent reason for quarrels among neighbors. Often even a court has to decide. Save yourself from such annoyance by observing the legal regulations on marginal distances when planting your shrubs. Incidentally, the same applies if you want to plant a hedge on your property line.
Decisive are the regulations or the neighborhood law of your state. Some countries have not legislated and you should use common sense. Recommended is then a minimum distance of about 50 centimeters in shrubs with a final size of less than two meters. If your shrubs are bigger, keep at least a meter apart.
What are the distances in my own garden?
Within your garden you do not have to observe any legal regulations, except, of course, the property boundary. It's about the good growth of your plants and shrubs. If these are too close together, then they compete for light, water and nutrients. This can lead to decreased growth or impair flowering.
As a rule of thumb, there is a minimum distance between individual shrubs of about half the expected height of growth. The roots of many shrubs spread as wide as the branches and twigs.
Plant a hedge of shrubs
If you want to plant a hedge, then this should of course be nice and tight, it looks similar with another screen, for example, on the terrace. Here you should choose slightly smaller distances.
