Star moss becomes brown - causes and treatment
While star moss is hated by many gardeners, others plant this very pretty plant in the garden. Even as a grave plant Sternmoos enjoys increasing popularity. However, in case of wrong care or unfavorable weather the star moss will turn brown. What can you do about it?
Why does starmoss turn brown?
Sternmoos convinces with its beautiful green color and the decorative star-shaped appearance. It is considered robust and hardy. That is only partially correct. Strong weather changes may not like this plant, which is strictly speaking not moss in a traditional sense.
If Sternmoos turns brown, it is almost always due to poor care or unfavorable weather. Possible causes are:
If the moss has been covered with snow for a long time in winter, it often turns yellow or brown because it did not get enough air under the snow cover and is therefore rotten.
Treat moss after browning
If the moss is only slightly brown or yellow, simply cut off affected parts of the plant. Loosen the soil under the star moss as much as possible, so that no waterlogging can form.
Spray the remaining plants with a liquid fertilizer. However, fertilization only makes sense until August, not later.
Too severely damaged star moss plants tear out and replace them with new plants.
So, do not bend so that moss does not turn brown
Sternmoos should be watered occasionally if dry. Waterlogging is essential to avoid, as it rots the roots.
Fertile star moss from spring to summer. Later in the year you are not allowed to fertilize any more, because the new shootings that are stimulated by it will not mature before winter. They die in the frost and then turn brown.
If autumn leaves on the moss, you should remove this. The mulch constricts the air supply and it creates waterlogging in the soil. Longer lying snowpacks in winter you should also shake off the star moss.
Tips
Star moss is quite good as a lawn replacement. It tolerates half and full shade better than turf plants and is therefore an ideal replacement plant for shaded areas.
