Refine stone fruit properly
In order to obtain pure varieties of stone fruit trees, the refining offers itself. This form of multiplication requires a certain amount of tact. But the effort is worth it, because grafted trees flower better and do not need a second pollinator plant in the area.
What is needed for refining
To refine you need a pad. This may be the shoot of a quince, a cherry, a pear or another stone fruit tree. Which base you use for finishing depends on the stone fruit variety.
In addition, you need precious rice from the stone fruit tree that you want to multiply, or whose positive qualities you want to promote.
Cut rice
Edelreiser are annual shoots that you cut depending on the type of fruit in winter. They must be at least 20 to 30 inches long.
The Reiser are wrapped in damp sand over the winter and kept in a frost-free room.
The finishing methods
The most important refinement methods for stone fruit are:
Okulation
Underlay and Edelreis should be the same thickness. They are cut obliquely several centimeters long. The cut must be made very evenly so that both riders fit together perfectly. On the outside of the Reiser one eye must be present. Then wrap the finish with bast.
Geißfußveredelung
For this purpose, a wedge is cut out of the thicker pad. The thinner circlet is sharply cut and driven into the wedge. Both parts must be as close together as possible. Again, the refining is wrapped in raffia.
Rindenpfropfen
This finishing method is only applicable if the bark of the pad can be easily loosened. That can be the case from April to summer. The bark of the pad is cut from top to bottom and slightly bent apart. The noble rivet is pushed in so deeply that at least one eye is covered by the bark. Bast is also used for attachment.
How you realize that the refinement has succeeded
The refinement of stone fruit has been successful when new branches or roots have formed at the refining site. This usually lasts until next year.
Tips & Tricks
As a beginner, you should first limit yourself to grafting, as this type of refinement is easiest. If you have more experience, try the advanced finishing methods.
