What costs do you have to expect when creating a rock garden?
A rock garden is a fine thing, which, once created, neither too much care nor money costs. However, applying it can be quite expensive - depending on how big the area should be and which plants you want to put on it. Even necessary preparatory work can go right into the money.
Required materials and the average cost
Before you can start to plant, first of all, depending on local conditions, various preparatory work is necessary. A rock garden on a slope, for example, must be fixed (for example, by a wall), heavy soil should be loosened up with sand and provided with a drainage of a layer of gravel and possibly water pipes. Breakstones and sand are quite cheap: here you have to expect around one to two and a half euros per square meter. In contrast, the stones are more expensive, especially when it comes to large natural stones. Depending on the type of rock, these can cost up to € 500 per square meter.
Caution: transporting large stones can cost you a whopping Euro
Sometimes not even the especially beautiful boulder is the really expensive object. Instead, its transport, possibly over many kilometers and with heavy equipment, is complex and expensive. For this reason, you should always ask before buying special stones after the removal and the expected transport costs - this prevents shocks when opening the subsequent invoice.
Cost depends on the size of the rock garden and selection of plants
Of course, a large rock garden with a lot of foundation is many times more expensive than a rock garden in a raised bed or even in a pot, no question. However, it can also be expensive in small rockeries, namely in the selection of plants. You can get common plants for just a few euros in the garden shop, but special rarities sometimes cost several hundred euros and can only be purchased from specialized specialist dealers or breeders.
Create a rock garden by a professional?
If you want to have the rock garden created by a professional, you must of course add the labor costs to the material. Depending on how big and elaborate the rock garden is to be designed and what equipment must be used for it, you can expect a cost between about 3000 to 10,000 and more euros.
Tips
For a heavy soil, it should always be dug up and improved with sand and a drainage layer. In addition, a rock garden on this ground should always be on a hillside and there in the upper area - so the water can flow away and does not accumulate in the plants.
