Multiply asparagus - this is how you win new asparagus plants
Asparagus multiplies through seeds that develop the asparagus blooms of a female or hermaphroditic plant in the fall. However, mostly only male plants, whose seeds do not germinate, grow on the large asparagus fields.
Where did you get seeds from?
There are several ways to get asparagus seeds:
Seeds of large asparagus fields mostly unusable
In order to plant a few bars of asparagus in the home garden, it is usually not worth buying large bags of seeds. Therefore hobby gardeners like to collect a few grains from the large asparagus fields from the commercial cultivation. There, however, usually only male plants are kept.
However, male plants do not produce a germinable seed. If you do not know if it's male or female, ask or ask other hobby gardeners for a few grains.
Buy seeds for the desired asparagus from the retailer, make sure that you select female or hermaphroditic plant seeds and no male plants. Then, from the second year of asparagus cultivation you can even gain seeds for propagation.
Seed seeds of own plants
After the asparagus season the asparagus is no longer stung or cut.
The asparagus plants then form long green stems, on which feathery leaves sit. In summer, the asparagus starts.
If the leaves of the asparagus plants are dark yellow in color, the seeds are also ripe and can be collected. They are released from the pulp and laid out to dry.
Why collecting seed is necessary
Even if you do not need seeds for growing in the garden, you should carefully collect the grains. Leave them on the foliage, they fall ripe on the ground. Next year, your garden will be covered with small asparagus plants.
Many hobby gardeners are happy when they receive asparagus seeds, especially if they are rare varieties. Simply exchange your seeds for other plants.
Tips & Tricks
Experienced hobby gardeners plant the freshly harvested asparagus seeds immediately into small pots and pull the asparagus plants over winter in the house. You can then put quite large plants in the field in May.
